FL Mouthpiece Models

GR Flugelhorn Mouthpieces are available with any GR Standard rim and cup diameter.

GR FL Model Flugelhorn Mouthpieces are ideal for most flugelhorn models. They offer a fat velvety tone, outstanding intonation, and an amazingly efficient upper register.

GR Flugelhorn Mouthpiece Backbores are balanced with each cup volume to produce a characteristic flugel sound with precise intonation.

GR Flugelhorn Mouthpiece Cups are designed to produce a full velvet like sound that can easily be colored. These mouthpieces feature outstanding intonation, common to all GR Mouthpieces, and a very easy upper register.

FL*** Mouthpiece Models

Similar to the FL models but with 10% more cup volume! If you are looking for the playability of the FL, along with an easy upper register but you want a more velvety sound, the FL*** Models are what you seek.

These models may not play quite as accurately as the standard FL Models but you will be able to color your sound and attacks more easily.

Want big?  This is it!!

FD Mouthpiece Models

The GR FD Model mouthpieces are a hybrid design for use on most trumpets and more resistant flugelhorns.  They offer a rich "Chet Baker-ish" sound and can also be used in place of a flugelhorn in most situations! The hybrid GR shank will match perfectly to most trumpet receivers and is specifically designed for some flugels.

FD Mouthpieces for Flugelhorn: The FD Trumpet/Flugelhorn Mouthpiece design is a unique new concept to improve the match for certain makes of flugelhorns. The FD design has a shorter overall length, a larger throat bore, more open throat entrance, unique new backbore, and new shank design. This design is a perfect match for the Conn Vintage One flugelhorn.  This shank may not engage into some flugels as far as the FL Mouthpieces.

FD Mouthpieces for Trumpet:

The GR FD Model mouthpieces are a hybrid design for use on most trumpets!  The sound is quite unique, almost like an "angry flugelhorn".  This is an ideal set up for post horn solos, jazz gigs, or when travelling and you simply can not take the extra horn with you.

The unique "flugel" cup makes this mouthpiece ideal for use on trumpet when you simply do not have a flugelhorn with you.

The FD Series is available with all standard GR rims and are made to order.

"The GR FD is one of my favourite "go to" mouthpieces for very soft exposed passages. It blends well with strings and is very forgiving to play. It works well for small intimate group settings. In many cases I will use it in place of my flugelhorn. It would also be a nice choice for certain Brass Quintet pieces. (I also call it my career saver.)"

GR / Melk Flugelhorn Leadpipes

Couesnon Flugelhorns are some of the most sought after flugels because of their characteristic sound and response.  Unfortunately the most common problem with these horns is with the leadpipe.  Problems range from mouthpieces not fitting correctly, to inaccurate attacks and questionable intonation.

Gary Radtke and Charlie Melk have worked together to develop a solution. The GR / Melk Couesnon Flugelhorn Leadpipe.

This leadpipe accepts any standard GR taper flugelhorn mouthpiece. It will not accept straight "French" tapered shanks. Play testing this leadpipe showed immediate improvement in soft attacks and intonation. All aspects of the Couesnon Flugel were improved.

Our Standard "In Stock" pipes have 4 7/8" of engagement into the horn.  These can be cut to match your existing pipe. Please contact us when ordering.

As Couesnon leadpipes vary in length, please measure the ENGAGEMENT of the leadpipe into your horn when placing your order.  This measurement does not include the tuning nib on the receiver end of the pipe. Please measure as in the photo below:

GR /Melk Flugelhorn Leadpipes will also fit Olds Clark Terry Model Flugelhorns and Blessing Artist Models.

"I was going to dump my Couesnon Flugelhorn. It's the only horn I've owned, purchased in 1966. Recently, I had a repairman remove the dents from the bottom pipe on the horn, including one near the main spit valve...the area was mis-shaped.  The horn played far worse following the repair. The turn near the spit valve was kind of flattened on the inside of the curve, and remains so."

"Today I received your GR/Melk Couesnon Leadpipe. The focus on every note is much improved, the overtones begin in the center and work outward...the original pipe is very uneven and seems to be, in some places, more peripheral than center. The response is greatly improved as well, attacks far closer to the strike and easier, as the notes are closer together than on the original. The intonation is greatly improved, as the even timbre and feel contribute to easier pitch control. Thank you very much!"
